'One sign of alcohol dependency is a high tolerance to alcohol. People
who drink heavily get used to alcohol and need to drink more and more in
order to achieve the same effect. Other possible signs include needing a
drink in the morning, and getting withdrawal symptoms if you stop
drinking suddenly, such as trembling, jitteriness and sweating.'

| | Pete Montgomery was one of the first people to visit
the Bridge drop-in in 2002 when it opened. Six years later he was baptised and then became a
volunteer, working in the kitchen and drop-in.
He said: ‘After my marriage finished in 2001 I lived in hostels and
my drinking got a lot worse. When I came to the Bridge I found it
relaxed and enjoyed it. I finally stopped the drink after a medical
crisis, and I didn’t want my two daughters to grow up remembering me
like that.
People like Ian and Andy have been good friends, and Andy showed me
in Habit Breaker more about the bible’s way of life. I knew I had to
break away from the wrong people and I wanted to be around the church
and good people – it’s what life’s about. Now I’m much happier and more
confident, and I enjoy joining in.’
Pete now leads a support group called Alcohol Free, helping people
with alcohol dependency issues. He is on a church training course for
basic leadership skills, and his young daughter also enjoys friendship
in the church and Jesus Centre.
